How to Properly Install a Gravity-Fed Sewer System

The slope, frost depth, and compaction of the subgrade determine whether a sewer system will function for 50 years or cause problems from the very first year. This is what we monitor on the construction site.

A gravity-fed sewer system has no pumps to compensate for construction errors: water flows only if the slope is correct and consistent along the entire length of the section. That is why the difference between a job done well and one done quickly only becomes apparent after a few years, when clogs and settlement occur.

Slope: Too Low Causes Clogs, Too High Causes Erosion

The rule of thumb for domestic drainage systems is a slope between 0.5% and 3%, depending on the diameter. Below the minimum, the water does not have the necessary velocity for self-cleaning, and sediment accumulates. Above the maximum, the water flows faster than the solids, which are left behind and settle—exactly the effect you wanted to avoid.

The slope should be checked with a laser level at each section between manholes, not just at the ends. A local unevenness of just a few centimeters creates a stagnation zone that becomes the starting point for a blockage.

The Bedding Layer Does Half the Work

The pipe is never laid directly on the excavated soil. Beneath it lies a layer of sand or fine, compacted ballast that absorbs the unevenness of the ground and distributes the load. Without it, the pipe rests on isolated points—such as a rock left in the trench—and will eventually fail exactly there.

Backfilling is done in successive layers, each compacted separately, with special attention paid to the area alongside the pipe: that is where most of the settlement occurs, leading to deformation of the PVC pipes.

Depth and Frost Protection

In the Brașov area, the frost depth requires a substantial minimum cover above the top of the pipe. Where the terrain does not allow for this, the solution is not to dig shallower, but to provide thermal insulation or a protective slab—otherwise, the first severe winter will cause the section to burst.

Manholes: Where Problems Become Apparent

Manholes are not just access points but also inspection points. Their placement at changes in direction, slope, and diameter is mandatory, and the distance between them must allow for intervention with drain-cleaning equipment.

An often-overlooked detail: the joint between the pipe and the manhole wall must be sealed with a flexible seal. A rigid seal cracks at the first instance of differential settlement and turns the manhole into a point of infiltration.

What to Check Before Acceptance

  • Water-tightness test on each section, prior to final backfilling
  • Video inspection of major collectors to identify deformations and grade deviations
  • Verification of the elevations at the foundation slab in each manhole
  • Proper restoration of the road structure where the route crosses the roadway

Each of these checks costs very little during construction but a great deal if skipped and discovered after acceptance.
