Sidewalks and Pavements: Why They Fail and How to Build Them to Last

Paving that sags, buckles, or loses its joints isn't a problem with the materials, but rather with the foundation and drainage. Those are the layers that really matter.

The paving you see is the top layer—the thinnest and least structurally important one. A sidewalk almost always fails due to the layers beneath it, not the stone or concrete on the surface.

Structure, from Bottom to Top

The subbase is constructed on compacted ground that has been cleared of topsoil. Next comes the foundation layer of ballast or crushed stone, compacted in successive layers—its thickness is determined based on the bearing capacity of the soil and the anticipated traffic, whether pedestrian or occasional vehicle traffic.

On top of the foundation comes the thin, uniform bedding layer of sand or gravel, which supports the paving elements. Its role is to level the surface, not to compensate for unevenness: if the foundation is uneven, a thicker bedding layer does not solve the problem but merely postpones it.

Drainage: The Real Cause of Most Failures

Water that stagnates beneath the pavement freezes, expands, and lifts the paving elements in certain areas. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles break down the structure within a few years.

The solution is a sufficient cross-slope to allow surface water to drain away and a permeable foundation layer that does not retain water. Where the layout does not allow for free drainage, gutters or longitudinal drains should be installed.

Curbs and Joints

The curb serves more than just an aesthetic purpose: it absorbs lateral thrust and keeps the pavement compact. Without proper embedding in concrete, the edges will crack first, and the cracking will spread inward.

Joints properly filled with fine sand transfer loads between elements and transform the paving into a unified surface. Joints that have been emptied of water or have become hollow must be refilled periodically—it is the cheapest maintenance task possible and the one most often overlooked.

Materials and Their Applications

Andesite cobblestones withstand traffic very well and age gracefully, making them suitable for high-profile areas. Concrete paving offers uniformity and predictable costs for large areas. Irregular natural stone requires more careful workmanship but yields a result that is hard to match in historic areas.

Regardless of the choice, the underlying structure remains the same. Expensive paving on a weak foundation will fail just as quickly as inexpensive paving.
