Utility Line Relocation: How to Clear a Site Without Disruptions
Large-diameter water mains or sewer collectors located on the site of a new development can be rerouted—with proper planning, phased construction, and connection within a short timeframe.
Many investments get stalled at the permitting stage because existing utility lines run through the site: a large-diameter water main, a sewer line, or a medium-voltage power line. The solution isn’t to relocate the project, but to reroute the utility—a technical undertaking, but one that’s predictable if planned correctly.
Identification phase: don’t rely on plans
Plans of existing utility lines are almost always incomplete or outdated. The actual route is confirmed through manual probing at critical points and detection methods. A survey costs the equivalent of one day’s work; a pipe broken due to lack of knowledge costs much more—including in terms of relations with the utility operator.
The new route is designed for the future, not just for today
The rerouting provides an opportunity to correct problems with the old route: insufficient depths, outdated materials, and inaccessible manholes. A well-chosen new route avoids areas designated for development and remains accessible for future maintenance, without hindering other developments.
For large-diameter pipes—D400 polyethylene or DN1000 steel—curvature radii, space for anchor blocks at changes in direction, and access for heavy equipment along the route are also important considerations.
Construction: Everything Is Prepared Before the Shutdown
The basic principle is that the new network is fully constructed and tested before any connections are made. The new section is installed, welded, or joined, pressure-tested, and disinfected if it carries drinking water. All of this takes place while the old network continues to operate normally.
The water supply is then shut off only for the time strictly necessary for the connection—usually a few hours, planned in coordination with the utility operator and announced to consumers.
Coordination with the Utility Operator
Permits, technical assistance during connection, and final acceptance are obtained in parallel with construction, not afterward. A well-coordinated diversion means that on the day of connection, the construction crew, the utility operator’s representative, and backup equipment are all on-site.
